Eclectic, anachronic, populist and campy, Yumay and TenLai subscribes to the hybrid hupiexi (opera) style of postwar Taiwanese opera and turns Shakespeare's tragedy into a merry, nonsensical comedy with music, dance, and slapstick. The play teases the ethnic tension between "Taiwanese" (Minnan speakers) and "Mainlanders" (Mandarin speakers), but dismisses it easily with a celebration of love's triumph.
