Advertised as "a light-hearted comedy," this adaptation does not intend to revise the gender bias of early modern Europe and largely adheres to the original. The process of "taming" is elaborated, with an added ghost trick to scare the shrew. All this is supposed to generate laughter, not sympathy or reflection. Humiliated, exhausted, frightened, starved, and locked up alone on her wedding night, the shrew attempts suicide. Only then does the tamer soften and apologize. Both in terms of content and form, this is a rather traditional and conservative production.

Abstract: Applying the theory of intercultural theatre, this paper examines how Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew was adapted into a Taiwanese opera by High Sun Taiwanese Opera Troupe. Employing gezaixi's theatrical conventions, the play contrast "bad woman, bad man" of old society with "lady and gentleman" in modem society. It also aims to compare the ideal images of both sexes in both societies.
