Measure for Measure [Liang duo] FILES Introduction; video (1); production background (7); program (1); review (2); bio (6) Loading the player... The story is set in 1930s Shanghai, a multicultural, capitalist, and corrupted soceity. While the music and visuals recapture Old Shanghai's glamour, the production also aims at reconstructing the playgoing experience of early modern England by presenting a Globe-like erected stage with balconies and trap doors, gallery seats, and a pit. The standing audience, who is encouraged to eat and drink while watching the play, often becomes part of the performance, as customers in a nightclub, onlookers on the streets, etc. Despite the play's nostalgic tone, Isabella's refusal to the Duke's proposal is an emphatically modern interpretation.
