Commissioned by the National Theater and the Hakka Affairs Council to promote Hakka culture, this high-profile, big-budgeted musical involves a cast and crew of 300 people. Combining live music (symphony orchestra, chorus, rock-'n'-roll, and Hakka folk music), multimedia, dance, popular culture (motocycle, Heelys, and role playing video games) and showcasing Hakka heritage, the show is ostentatious. The various elements, however, do not always cohere. Downplaying the war between the sexes, the play emhasizes love and cooperation.

Abstract: The musical My Daughter’s Wedding is not merely a Hakka version of The Taming of the Shrew; it replaces the violent process of “taming the shrew” with the warmness of Hakka culture. One can find traditional Hakka features such as “blue shirts” and live Hakka music played on Pa-Yin (“eight notes,” i.e., eight different categories of instrument), as well as modern elements like an internet café, video games and motorcycles.
