Abstract：Cardenio is based on a "lost play" by Shakespeare, which came from Don Quixote de la Mancha. The play has been adapted in 12 countries, including Betrayal in Chinese xiqu. Shakespearean drama, modern American theatre, and xiqu differ immensely, and "target culture" dictates changes. This essay applies Linda Hutcheon's theory of adaptation, discussing the intertextuality between Betraysl and its source, and how the play re-constructs the text in the framework of Chinese culture.
