Chu An-li as Ariel

Chu An-li is an outstanding performer of huadan (flirtatious female) roles with the Kuo Kuang Chinese Opera Company. She trained at the Lu Kuang Chinese Opera School, the Taiwan Arts School, and the Taiwan College of Arts. At first she was in the specialism of wudan (military female) roles, and showed alacrity in stylised movements. Later, she transferred to huadan training because of her sweet persona, clear voice and expressive presentations. Her best known repertoire includes Chuncao Trespasses into the Court, Selling Water, Ten Episodes about Song Jiang, Li Shimin and Wei Zheng, etc., for which she was presented the Lliterary and Art Works Award by Chinese Writers’ & Artists’ Association and the Best Actor/Actress in Dan Roles by the Organisation of the Chinese Cultural Renaissance Movement. She played the female lead role in the new original Peking opera, Liao Tianding and Journey through Hell, starring roles in the experimental operatic drama Macbeth, the Puppet, the Peking opera studio productions, Mr. Goodman Dumps His Wife and Three Persons and Two Lamps, all to popular acclaim. She has gone on many overseas tours with the Contemporary Legend Theatre, and was the lead actress in The Hidden Concubine staged in Hong Kong.
