Abstract:Upon the 20th anniversary of the Godot Theatre Company, the artistic director expresses his gratitude to his team and the audiences throughout the years. "A wonderful world" will be the slogan for the next 20 years.
Twenty years!? So fast! Before I could think of how to express my gratitude for those who have supported Godot Theatre through the years, our 20th anniversary has already arrived. On the pamphlet of our first production The Zoo Story, my teacher Qi-Mei Wang wrote: “It will not be as romantic as you have imagined. It will take endless patience and hard work in theatre career.” Her words seem to be still ringing in my ears even after all the years Godot has progressed through.

Never-ending gratitude.

I would like to thank each and every partner on and off stage. In each performance, the greatest moment for me is the hour before the audience enters the theater. The performers are on the stage warming up, some meditate, some practice their lines, and others stretch their bodies; the technical crew check and double check all the details on and off stage; the administrative staff and volunteers work to make the whole theater a temple for spiritual fulfillment. Be it in Taipei, Kaohsiung, Beijing or Shanghai, half an hour before curtain time, I always gather all the performers together in a circle. For the past 20 years, every time I held their hands at that moment, I have always felt the passion and devotion of the theater people.

I want to thank each and every character who had lived on stage. We have come to know many friends in the scripts. These friends may be villains or heroes, somber or funny, some were real people but most were fictional. During rehearsals, we discovered these friends. We got to know them through various means and we made them live once again on the stage. They all have something to teach us. We are so fortunate. People live only once but the theater people live many lives.

I would like to thank each and everyone who has come to watch our performances. Every laughter made us happier than before; each applause encouraged us a bit more; each drop of tear irrigated this young sapling called Godot which sprang in the desert alone. Now the once young sapling has grown into a tree that bears abundant fruits. 50 productions. This is a tribute from Godot to you.

In the 5th year of our existence, we adopted “Changing Times, Unchanging Love” as our slogan.

From the 10th year, our slogan has been “Today, which show do you want to see?”

Next 20 years…

“A Wonderful World”
