Abstract：Adapted from The Merchant of Venice, Bond contains fundamental conflicts between theory and practice. The adapters claim to be loyal to the original, yet omit the subplots and alter race and religion, which characterize Shakespeare's original. This essay argues, based on textual evidence studies of cultural differences, that Bond is rather a cross-cultural appropriation.
