Sonata of the Witches - The Macbeth Verses

Macbeth is the second production of Tainan Jen Theatre's project of producing faithful min-nanhua (Taiwanese language)-adaptation of Western dramatic canons. Tainan Jen Theatre's Macbeth, directed by Po Shen Lu whose Antigone production was unanimously claimed to be the most successful intercultural experiment in recent years, attempts to do a great deal of soul-searching about Shakespeare's relevance for and interest to contemporary Taiwanese audience. This production aims to create a mutually-benefited intercultural negotiation between modernity and tradition, Taiwan and England, East and West. The production only features a group of five actors who have received the training of “The Singing Body” which will enable the actors to explore and realize ‘musicality’ that produces the distinguished form of Shakespeare's plays. Masks and stilts will also be used to create the supernatural world of the Weird Sisters. The production is designed by Wei Mu Lee with lighting by Chih Jen Ho, costume by Hung Hui Chao, music by Chiao Jung Yang and mask by Jung Shen Lee.
