Gezaixi, Taiwan's native operatic theatre, started as grassroots entertainment and lacked the grandeur and refinement of some more courtly and literary genres. Reflecting keen ethnic self-awareness, Holo invokes Shakespeare to raise the local theatre's profile. Formally―in terms of music, visuals, and acting―the production is remarkable, though idealogically it struggles for coherence with its mixture of Zen Buddhism, Taoism/Daoism, Confucianism, and Western concepts of liberty, democracy, and equality.
