Another grand production by the Contemporary Legend Theatre after The Kingdom of Desire, the play features large-scale battle scenes and groundbreaking music and stage techniques, and the trio scene is a classic. The playwright adds the Queen's background to further complicate the Prince's psychology. The Prince's martial, heroic guise differs from Hamlet's image as a melancholy scholar. To fit the operatic genre, many of Shakespeare's famous lines are cut, a practice that generates criticism.

Abstract: The director's mission is not only to preserve jingju but also to liberate it. Using a foreign play is merely a process and a strategy in exploring forms of jingju. The protagonist faces more serious moral conflict due to Chinese culture's emphasis on human relations. The stage presents effects similar to movies.

Abstract: The playwright claims ignorance about Western drama but still accepts the challenge, hoping to provide jingju more materials and depth. Though the result may not be satisfactory, it is an experiments of preserving tradition and creating and the same time. Borrowing from the West is but a strategy--the ultimate concern is still Chinese.

Abstract: The Contemporary Legend Theatre's debut The Kingdom of Desire generated controversy but also gave the group confidence. This is a new production after three years of preparation. Wu Hsing-kuo thinks Shakespeare's structure helps him to enhance the performance style and depth of Chinese opera. Though it is difficult, they received much help from others.
